▷ HOW DID THE MUSICAL ACADEMY BEGIN?

academia musical

We did an internal interview to learn about the origins of the Vivace Musical Academy, which provides online music courses. The director told us a little about him, how he started and how the academy went from in-person to virtual 100%.

At the end you can see the video of the most relevant fragments of the interview. We hope that, through your experience, you take some important values to fulfill your dreams.

A bit of his career

Rubén Echavarría was born in Medellín Colombia, he began his musical training from the age of 4, when his parents enrolled him in music classes, which he says positively impacted his intellectual, social and emotional formation. Being young, he never imagined that one day he would found a musical academy. From the age of 12 to 17, he studied music theory with an emphasis on piano at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and then began to form and direct several groups of different genres such as rock, pop, bossa nova and Irish music, where he performed the piano, the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar, he electric bass, the transverse flute and other instruments. In 2009 he graduated as a psychologist from the University of San Buenaventura.

More than just a music academy

But he is not only dedicated to music, but currently, in addition to directing the Vivace team, as he calls it, he is also dedicated, together with his wife, to providing psychotherapy and coaching programs online. He expresses that since he graduated as a professional he began to explore the benefits of music from psychology and the bases of music therapy, which motivated him to sit down to make the business plan for what would be the Vivace Musical Academy, but with a different approach.

That different approach It consists of combining principles of psychology, coaching and accelerated learning with musical teaching, so that each student who enters the Vivace Musical Academy, not only learns music, but also has the possibility of increasing their level of discipline, their creative thinking, your emotional intelligence, your self-esteem and other skills for your life in general. Rubén points out that, for his team of instructors, music is more than an end, it is a means or a bridge, so that each student can be a musician and an integral person.

How did the musical academy emerge, in what year, what were its origins like?

“Well, at first it wasn't easy because I didn't have the support of my family because maybe they wanted to see if I had enough commitment to achieve my first results, so I decided to go it alone, giving private classes at home for more or less 3 years. I remember that at that time I had classes in different cities, so I had to travel long distances on a motorcycle, sometimes with a lot of sun and other times with rain, but deep down I knew that I was paying the price for something better.”

Rubén tells us that by then, running his own musical academy became his great dream, and giving private classes for several years allowed him to perfect his teaching method, which consists of combining music with the psychology of learning. In 2016, his parents recognize his passion and consistency in the process, and therefore decide to support him (his father is an accountant and his mother is an administrator).

So they centralize the music classes in a location located in the Laureles neighborhood in the city of Medellín. He mentions that it was a new stage full of great challenges, because not all of his students continued, so, although he had a base of students, it was up to him to be the teacher, the manager, the seller and even the one who served the red wines.

And then how did the music academy go from being in-person to virtual 100%?

“I was already thinking about taking online music courses, and due to the pandemic and together with my wife, who is currently the administrator, we were forced to have to reinvent ourselves, so we decided to migrate all the programs, modules, topics and resources complementary, to our website from where today we teach students in different countries.”
